A day with ALTA VITA in San Francisco
I decided to begin this section with a city I know and love. This month marks the anniversary of my latest trip there after spending more than two years flying in and out—an eleven-hour flight as often as many would take a train or bus. I can’t say I miss the nine hours of jet lag, but I do miss this beautiful city, so unique and hard to define.
One of the things that makes it extraordinary is its setting on the bay, surrounded by water, hills, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes. It is vibrant, dynamic, multicultural, and just the right size: not overwhelming, but large enough to offer a great variety of things to see and do. The weather is not what one might expect from California—quite chilly and often foggy, with occasional heavy rain—but when the sun appears the light is vivid and the air feels pure.
I spent many weekends wandering the city alone between workweeks, and that’s how I came to know it well and learned to live like a local.
Start the day early—jet lag helps with that—and get your energy with a run by the ocean or a Megaformer class at Bodyrok FiDi. If you are there on a Saturday, don’t miss the charming farmer’s market at the Embarcadero. It’s a perfect spot for breakfast and for shopping local products at the stands, and inside the Ferry Building you’ll find all sorts of treats.
You can also go for brunch at The Grove or taste the delicious Green Goddess salad at The Palace Hotel. The ambiance there is very old-fashioned; you’ll momentarily feel as if you’re still in classic San Francisco.
Spend the afternoon in the Marina District, around the Presidio and Crissy Field for breathtaking views of the Golden Gate. Indulge in shopping along Chestnut and Fillmore streets. If you’re up for a trail, I suggest Lands End: it’s short and easy, the views are incredible, and you can reach Baker Beach in time for sunset.
If the weather doesn’t allow for such an outdoor itinerary, there are a variety of museums that you can choose from. some of my favorites are SFMOMA and de Young
Finding a place to wine and dine to end this perfect day shouldn’t be hard—the selection of restaurants from around the world is broad. Check the nourish section for some picks.
I bet you’ll be ready for an early night after all this excitement.
There is much more to do in San Francisco and the Bay area, so if you’re planning a trip, reach out directly and I can provide more suggestions to help you live like a local.
